Root Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment is a procedure that is performed on a tooth with infected pulp. Caries generally invades a tooth layer by layer, so it enters from the enamel, then it proceeds to the dentin and finally enters the innermost portion, the pulp. Here is a brief overview of what happens during the treatment:

  • The decayed portion of the tooth is first removed and cleaned

  • The dentist uses a drill to access the opening to the pulp chambers

  • Endodontic files are used to removes all the pulp from the canals, along with bacterial debris

  • The canals are then shaped and disinfected

  • A special endodontic material is then used to fill these canals

  • Finally the tooth is fitted with a crown to protect it from further damage and to restore its function in the mouth
